Zidane Names First France Squad With Five New Faces

Zinedine Zidane has announced his first France squad since taking charge of the national team, with five players receiving their maiden call-ups for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures. Liverpool defender Jérémy Jacquet is the most notable name among the new faces.

The 21-year-old centre-back joined Liverpool earlier this year and has quickly made an impression at Anfield. Jacquet made his debut for the club in the 2–2 Premier League draw against Newcastle United on August 23 and has featured in all six of Liverpool’s matches across competitions so far this season.

Five Players Earn Their First Call-Ups

Alongside Jacquet, goalkeeper Restes, defender Diouf, midfielder Da Cunha and forward Laplace have all received their first senior France call-ups under Zidane.

Zidane has also retained most of France’s established stars. Captain Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and other regular members of the squad remain part of the team for the Nations League campaign.

Real Madrid midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni is among the notable absentees. However, his club teammate Eduardo Camavinga has returned to the national squad after missing out on France’s World Cup selection.

Zidane Begins a New Era

Zidane was appointed as Didier Deschamps’ successor in July, signing on to lead France through the 2030 World Cup.

His coaching credentials were built during a hugely successful spell at Real Madrid, where he guided the Spanish giants to three consecutive Champions League titles.

Zidane also has a legendary history with France as a player. His outstanding performances helped Les Bleus win their first-ever World Cup on home soil in 1998.

Nations League to Mark Zidane’s Debut

Zidane’s first match as France coach will come on September 25 against Türkiye in the Nations League. France will then travel to face Belgium before hosting Italy and Belgium in October.

With a new coach, five first-time internationals and the return of Camavinga, France are entering a new chapter under one of the most decorated figures in the country’s football history.
