Smith is currently occupied with the European T20 League. Meanwhile, a packed international schedule awaits Australia; the team is set to play 22 Test matches over the next 11 months. The highlight of this period is undoubtedly the Ashes series in England next June.

However, it is not yet certain whether Smith will feature in that Ashes series.

Smith Uncertain About the Ashes 

In an interview with *The Telegraph*, Smith spoke candidly about his future. He does not wish to make a decision right now regarding whether he will play in the upcoming Ashes.

Smith said, "I’m not sure myself if I’ll be there [for the next Ashes]. I’m taking it series by series right now, and that’s how it’s been for a while. That time is still a long way off for me."

He did mention, however, that tasting Ashes victory on English soil would be wonderful. The former Australian captain believes one must wait to see if that actually comes to pass.

Content with Test Career

Smith has scored 37 centuries in 125 Test matches, maintaining an average of nearly 54. Throughout this long career, alongside personal milestones, he has witnessed numerous memorable moments for Australia.

Consequently, Smith is quite satisfied with his Test career. Yet, while his future in the longest format remains uncertain, he intends to continue playing T20 cricket.

The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics is a factor behind this decision.

Smith Wants to Play in the Olympics

Cricket is set to return to the Olympics in 2028 after a 128-year hiatus. By then, Smith will be over 39 years old, yet he has expressed a desire to be part of the Olympic Games.

Smith said, "At this moment, the Olympics is perhaps the only thing I’d really like to try and be a part of." "One of the main reasons for playing in European leagues is to keep playing T20 cricket for as long as possible."

In other words, even if he steps away from Test cricket, he plans to extend his career in the shorter format for a while longer.

What will he do after retirement?

There is also speculation about what Smith will do after retiring. Given his love for batting and his cricketing knowledge, many envision him becoming a coach in the future.

However, Smith has not yet made any decisions regarding his future. Instead, he believes he still has some time left as a player.

In Smith's words, "I still think I can continue playing T20 cricket for a while longer. What does the future hold after I stop playing? I’m not sure, but I hope I still have some time left as a player."

Reflecting on his career, Smith added that he has achieved a great deal as a player, describing the journey of the past 15 years or so as fantastic.

Consequently, Smith is not looking to announce his retirement just yet; instead, he prefers to take things series by series. As a result, we will have to wait to find out whether the 37-year-old star will feature in the upcoming Ashes.
