Argentina failed to retain the World Cup after losing the 2026 final to Spain, but AFA president Claudio Tapia still believes Lionel Scaloni’s side is the greatest team in the country’s football history.
Speaking at the AFA Sponsor Day event, Tapia said the national team’s sustained success over recent years has elevated this generation above all previous Argentine sides. He argued that winning four of the last five major finals is a remarkable achievement and praised the team’s display against Spain despite the defeat.
Under Scaloni, Argentina have captured the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 Finalissima, the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2024 Copa América. The 2026 World Cup final was their fifth major final in this period, meaning they have won four of those five showpiece matches.
The event brought together more than a hundred brands associated with the national team, with members of the coaching staff also in attendance. Tapia highlighted the demanding schedule of the 2026 World Cup, the increased number of matches, travel challenges and time-zone differences. He said that maintaining such a high level of performance through those difficulties shows why this Argentina team deserves to be considered one of the finest in football history.
