Travis Head Hits Record Century as Australia Beat Zimbabwe in Second ODI

Travis Head produced a record-breaking century as Australia secured another convincing victory over Zimbabwe in the second ODI. The left-handed opener’s explosive hundred, supported by useful contributions from Mitchell Marsh and Cooper Connolly, helped Australia post a huge total of 356.

Zimbabwe were set 357 to win but struggled to keep pace with the required run rate. Their innings eventually ended well short of the target, giving Australia another comfortable victory in the series.

Head Reaches Century in Just 75 Balls

Head was the standout performer with the bat. He reached his century in only 75 balls, setting a new record for the fastest ODI century by an Australian batter against Zimbabwe.

The previous record belonged to Matt Renshaw, who had scored his maiden ODI century from 86 balls just three days earlier in the opening match of the series. Head surpassed that mark in spectacular fashion.

The opener eventually finished with 112 from 84 deliveries, smashing 15 fours and three sixes. His innings came at a strike rate of 133.33 and earned him the Player of the Match award.

Australia Remain Unbeaten When Head Scores a Century

Head’s latest hundred also extended a remarkable record. This was the 20th international century of his career across Test and ODI cricket, and Australia have never lost a match in which he has reached three figures.

Twelve of Head’s centuries have come in Test cricket, while eight have been scored in ODIs. Across those 20 matches, Australia have won all but one, with the remaining game ending in a draw.

Head provided the foundation, while Cooper Connolly and captain Mitchell Marsh also made important contributions. Connolly scored 78, while Marsh added 53 as Australia finished on 356 in their 50 overs.

Brad Evans was Zimbabwe’s leading bowler, taking three wickets.

Zimbabwe Fall Short in Record Chase

Zimbabwe needed 357 for victory but were unable to sustain the chase. Captain Sikandar Raza top-scored with 45, while four Australian bowlers claimed two wickets each to keep the home side under constant pressure.

Zimbabwe have only once previously crossed 300 while chasing against Australia in an ODI. In 2001, they scored 301 while chasing a target of 303, eventually losing by just one run.

This time, however, the target proved far beyond Zimbabwe’s reach.

The third and final ODI of the series will be played in Harare on September 20. Zimbabwe will now look to respond in the series finale, while Australia will aim to complete a clean sweep.
