Mac Allister Stars as Liverpool Beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 After 29-Pass Move
Liverpool 2–1 Atletico Madrid
Alexis Mac Allister had expressed his frustration over Liverpool’s decision not to offer him a new contract just a day before the match. But the Argentine midfielder responded in the best possible way—on the pitch.
Mac Allister scored the decisive goal as Liverpool came from behind to beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 at Anfield in the Champions League. His winning strike came at the end of a brilliant 29-pass attacking move, underlining his importance to Arne Slot’s side.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Mac Allister revealed that he had been told Liverpool were currently not in a position to offer him a new contract. His existing deal runs until 2028, meaning the club has no immediate need to renegotiate his terms.
But the midfielder quickly reminded everyone of his value on the field.
Atletico took the lead in the 17th minute through Marcos Llorente. The Spanish midfielder continued his impressive scoring record at Anfield, with this becoming his fifth goal in his last three visits to Liverpool’s home ground.
Llorente has painful memories for Liverpool supporters at the stadium. In 2020, just before football was halted because of the COVID-19 pandemic, he scored twice at Anfield to eliminate the then-European champions from the Champions League.
This time, however, Liverpool fought back.
Dominik Szoboszlai brought the hosts level in the 40th minute, giving Liverpool renewed confidence before the break.
The Reds continued to press after half-time and eventually completed the comeback through Mac Allister. Just five minutes into the second half, a superb 29-pass move opened up Atletico’s defence before Mac Allister finished the attack with a powerful strike.
The Argentine immediately ran towards the Anfield crowd to celebrate, a completely different picture from the disappointed midfielder who had spoken to the media the previous day.
Liverpool then managed to protect their advantage and secure a 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid.
For Mac Allister, it was the perfect response to his frustration over the contract situation. His performance and decisive goal once again demonstrated why he remains an important part of Liverpool’s midfield.
