Due to a rain-soaked outfield, the match was shortened to just five overs. Spinners found significant turn right from the start, and spin bowlers delivered all ten overs of the match. The sluggish outfield also made batting difficult.

Consequently, India's total of 32 did not seem like an easy target for Japan. However, Japan got back into the game by scoring 10 runs in the third over bowled by Ravi Bishnoi. They needed 16 runs from the final two overs, and at one stage, the equation stood at 8 runs needed off 8 balls.
