Lakshmipathy Balaji Named India A Coach for Australia A Series

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed former India fast bowler Lakshmipathy Balaji as the coach of India A for the upcoming home series against Australia A.

The unofficial Test series between the two sides will begin on September 22 in Puducherry, with an ODI series scheduled at the same venue in October.

Why Did BCCI Choose Balaji?

The BCCI has not officially explained why Balaji was selected for the India A coaching role. When India A’s squad was announced on September 9, the board’s official release did not mention the coach’s name.

His appointment was subsequently reported by news agency PTI.

The decision also comes at a time when India’s coaching staff faces a busy international schedule. With several members of the coaching setup occupied with other assignments, Balaji has been given responsibility for the Australia A series.

Balaji Brings Extensive Coaching Experience

Balaji has considerable experience in coaching after ending his playing career.

The former India pacer has worked with IPL franchises Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders. He has also coached Tamil Nadu at the domestic level.

Earlier this year, Balaji was involved with the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence, giving him further experience working with India’s emerging and developing players.

His familiarity with the domestic system and young cricketers makes him a natural fit for an India A assignment.

VVS Laxman and Gautam Gambhir Have Different Roles

VVS Laxman will also have an important role within India’s coaching structure. Laxman previously guided India to a gold medal at the 2023 Asian Games and has remained involved in coaching responsibilities around the national setup.

Meanwhile, India’s senior men’s team will have a separate coaching assignment during the same period. From September 27 to October 16, India are scheduled to host the West Indies for ODI and T20I series, with Gautam Gambhir serving as the head coach.

With multiple teams operating simultaneously, the BCCI has divided coaching responsibilities among its available staff.

Balaji’s appointment for the Australia A series is therefore part of that broader coaching arrangement, with India A preparing for two formats against Australia A in Puducherry.
