Ajit Agarkar’s Tenure as India Chief Selector Could End After West Indies Selection

Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as chairman of the India national selection committee could be nearing its end. According to a PTI report, selecting India’s squad for the upcoming series against the West Indies could be his final assignment as chief selector.

Agarkar’s original contract was due to expire in June this year but was later extended until October. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to confirm whether his tenure will be extended further.

Agarkar Reportedly Preparing Farewell Message

According to the PTI report, Agarkar has already indicated to people close to him that his tenure could be coming to an end. He has also reportedly prepared an email thanking the BCCI.

Neither Agarkar nor the BCCI has officially confirmed the development so far. That leaves open the possibility of an announcement after the West Indies squad is selected or once his current contract officially expires.

Agarkar’s tenure has included several discussions and controversies surrounding India’s team selection. More recently, speculation over Rohit Sharma’s place in the team was also accompanied by reports of differences between the selectors and the board.

Three Years Marked by Major Successes

Agarkar became India’s chief selector in mid-2023 after former chairman Chetan Sharma left the position. One of his first major responsibilities was selecting India’s squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup.

During his tenure, India won the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups as well as the 2025 Champions Trophy. India also achieved success in the Asia Cup during the period.

The major setback came at the 2023 ODI World Cup, when India reached the final but failed to lift the trophy.

Agarkar Wanted to Continue Until the ODI World Cup

Agarkar had reportedly expressed his desire to continue as chief selector until the next ODI World Cup and had requested an extension.

However, the BCCI has yet to respond positively to that request. PTI reported that the board has not yet contacted Agarkar regarding a further extension.

If the West Indies squad selection does become his final assignment, Agarkar’s three-year stint as India’s chief selector could soon come to an end, paving the way for a new chapter in Indian cricket’s selection committee. An official decision, however, is still awaited from the BCCI.
