Konaté Promises His All for Real Madrid
Real Madrid are continuing to unveil their new coach and signings ahead of the new season. After José Mourinho and Bernardo Silva, the Spanish giants officially presented new defender Ibrahima Konaté on Thursday.
The 27-year-old joined Real Madrid as a free agent after leaving Liverpool at the end of his contract. Club president Florentino Pérez welcomed Konaté at the presentation, with the French centre-back signing a deal until June 30, 2030. He will wear the No. 16 shirt.
For Konaté, joining Real Madrid is the fulfilment of a childhood dream.
“The first football shirt I ever received was a Real Madrid shirt. My older brother gave it to me. From that moment, I always dreamed of playing for this incredible club. I’m extremely happy to have fulfilled that dream.”
The French defender also made his ambitions clear. He wants to help Real Madrid return to the top and become part of the club’s history.
“I know there are huge expectations when you wear this shirt. I’m here to give everything for the club, both on and off the pitch. I want to be part of Real Madrid’s history, win trophies and win the Champions League. I promise I will give everything for this shirt.”
Konaté’s arrival also strengthens Real Madrid’s defensive options. Injuries caused problems for the club’s back line last season, and the experienced centre-back brings plenty of experience from both Liverpool and the French national team.
He is the latest high-profile player to join Real Madrid without a transfer fee. Kylian Mbappé and Trent Alexander-Arnold also arrived at the Santiago Bernabéu as free agents in recent times.
Konaté’s Champions League ambitions carry a personal touch. He was part of the Liverpool team that lost the 2022 final to Real Madrid. Now, he wants to win Europe’s biggest club trophy with the team that once stood in his way.
With Real Madrid looking to end a two-season wait for a major trophy, Konaté is ready to play his part. The club will begin their La Liga title defence against Espanyol on Saturday.
