Granit Xhaka Left Out of Switzerland Squad After Admitting Fake COVID Certificate

Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka has been left out of the national team’s upcoming camp after admitting that he obtained a fake COVID-19 vaccination certificate in the past.

The decision was made jointly by Xhaka and the Swiss Football Association (SFV) after the midfielder publicly acknowledged his actions and expressed regret.

In a statement shared on social media, the 33-year-old midfielder said he had been dealing with fear, uncertainty and serious concerns about the COVID-19 vaccine at the time. Instead of addressing his questions through the proper channels, he obtained a vaccination certificate.

Xhaka now accepts that the decision was wrong and has apologized. He has also confirmed that he is cooperating fully with the relevant authorities as the matter is investigated.

Xhaka to Miss Switzerland’s Nations League Matches

Xhaka, who currently plays for Premier League side Sunderland, will not join Switzerland’s training camp in Belek, Turkey, for the upcoming international fixtures.

Switzerland are preparing for Nations League matches against North Macedonia and Scotland away from home, followed by home fixtures against Slovenia and North Macedonia.

Swiss Football Association president Peter Knaebel said the decision to proceed without Xhaka was made with the interests and stability of the team in mind.

The federation also welcomed Xhaka’s decision to publicly address the issue and accept responsibility. The priority, according to Knaebel, is now to maintain focus on the national team and its upcoming Nations League commitments.

Investigation Underway

The case remains under investigation, with Xhaka confirming that he will cooperate fully with the authorities. The Swiss Football Association is expected to reassess the situation and discuss the next steps with the midfielder after the current international window.

Xhaka remains Switzerland’s most-capped player, having made 152 appearances for the national team since his international debut in 2011. No decision has been announced regarding his position as captain at this stage.
