Joe Root created history in the fourth over of Pakistan's second innings at Headingley. The England captain set a new record in Test cricket by palming the catch slip of Pakistan's Azan Wise off Jofra Archer.

The catch to return Wise for 9 runs was the 219th catch of Root's Test career. With this, Root now has the most catches in Test history among non-wicketkeeper fielders. He has surpassed Australia's Steve Smith, who has 218 catches.

India's Rahul Dravid is after Root and Smith in this list. The former Indian batsman has 210 catches. Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardene is fourth with 205 catches and South African legend Jacques Kallis is fifth with 200 catches.

The Headingley Test was full of personal milestones for Root. He also made history with the bat the day before. Root touched another record of Sachin Tendulkar by scoring 66 runs off 112 balls in the first innings of a Test.

With this fifty, Root's number of innings of 50 or more runs in Tests has reached 68. Tendulkar also has 68 fifties in Tests. As a result, both of them are at the top of this list jointly. After them is Shivnarine Chanderpaul, with 66 fifties. Allan Border and Rahul Dravid have 63 each.

Root's statistics as a captain are also quite rich. He has now scored 50 or more runs innings while leading England. Root is fifth in this list. South Africa's Graeme Smith is at the top with 61. He is followed by Ricky Ponting with 54, Allan Border with 51 and Misbah-ul-Haq with 43 innings.

England has maintained control of the match as well as the personal record. After Pakistan were bowled out for just 171 in the first innings, England scored 409 in their first innings, giving the hosts a huge lead of 238 runs.

Root then took his 219th catch by dismissing Azan Wais early in Pakistan's second innings, not only tightening his grip on the match, but also putting himself at the top of the list of the greatest fielders in Test history.
