England have won the Headingley Test by an innings and 103 runs. After Joe Root's outstanding innings with the bat, the hosts took complete control of the match with the excellent performance of the bowlers.
After Pakistan were all out for just 171 runs in the first innings, England built a big total with the bat and took the fate of the match in their favor. Joe Root's important innings and the combined performance of the English batsmen took the hosts' score to 409 runs. As a result, England took a huge lead of 238 runs over Pakistan in the first innings itself.
Even after coming out to bat in the second innings, the Pakistani batsmen could not put up any resistance against the English bowlers. The visitors failed to avoid an innings defeat by losing wickets at regular intervals.
England captain Joe Root shone in both batting and fielding in the match. He also became the owner of the highest catch among non-wicketkeeper fielders in Test cricket by catching Azan Wais in Pakistan's second innings. His number of catches is now 219, surpassing Australia's Steve Smith.
Earlier, Root had also registered another record by playing an innings of 66 runs in the first innings. His number of fifties in Tests is now 68, which is equal to Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar.
Overall, the big loss to England at Headingley is disappointing for Pakistan. On the other hand, this great victory has strengthened England's position in the series.
