This was precisely the scenario during the golden era of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. For a full decade—from 2008 to 2017—these two legends held absolute sway over the Ballon d’Or; whenever one won the award, the other was inevitably part of the conversation. Although that chapter eventually closed, the old rivalry seems to be reigniting now.

This is because Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal and Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé have emerged as direct contenders in the race for the Ballon d’Or.

Yamal and Mbappé Assert Their Claims 

Speculation regarding the potential winner has been intense since the shortlist for this year's Ballon d’Or was announced. Mbappé, Yamal, and Harry Kane are among the most talked-about nominees. However, while Kane lets his performance statistics speak for themselves, both Mbappé and Yamal have openly voiced their own claims to the award.

Mbappé was the first to speak out. In a press conference ahead of a Champions League match against Inter Milan, the French star highlighted that he had made history on a stage as significant as the World Cup. In his view, this has been a stellar year in his career—one that warrants winning the Ballon d’Or.

According to the young Barcelona star, he and Mbappé are currently the two best players in the world. Yamal believes that, given his achievements and performances, he is the one who deserves this year's Ballon d’Or. The gist of his argument is that those who have regularly watched the matches will understand why he considers himself deserving of the award.

Statistics in Mbappé’s favor

A look at his performance reveals that Mbappé’s claim is far from baseless. His goal tally on the World Cup stage has established him as one of the greatest goalscorers in the tournament's history.

Before the World Cup, the French forward was also in superb goal-scoring form for Real Madrid, playing a pivotal role in setting up goals for his teammates. However, while he excelled individually, the lack of a major team trophy with Real Madrid could prove to be a slight hurdle for his candidacy.

Yamal’s strength lies in team success

On the other hand, Yamal—who finished second in the Ballon d'Or voting last time—has further strengthened his case this year. Beyond his performances on the big stage for Spain, he played a crucial role in Barcelona’s La Liga triumph.
